Paid Safe Time Leave - Protecting Survivors
In June of 2023, Pink Purpose Founder - Sophia Brink - proposed a resolution for 40 hours of paid safe time leave for County employees who are vicitms of domestic violence, human trafficking, and stalking in the County of San Mateo, California. The resolution was passed with an unanimous vote by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, making San Mateo County the first County in the State of California to adopt such policy.
Research has found that domestic violence survivors are more likely to face housing insecurity, food insecurity, and the inability to afford childcare, when they are forced to take time off of work when confronting the aftermath of leaving an abusive situation- filing for restraining orders and police reports, attending court hearings, and seeking safety away from their abusers. Paid safe time leave for domestic violence survivors is critically important as it serves as a lifeline for individuals trapped in abusive relationships and situations. This policy empowers survivors by providing them with the financial security needed to escape dangerous situations without the fear of losing their jobs or income. It allows survivors the time and resources to seek legal assistance, medical care, and counseling, all essential steps towards breaking the cycle of abuse. By offering paid safe time leave, we create a safety net that prevents survivors from feeling coerced into returning to their abusers due to economic dependence. This support enables survivors to rebuild their lives, regain their independence, and ultimately break free from the shackles of domestic violence, fostering a safer and more resilient society for all.
Our hope is for every City, County, and State in the United States to implement Paid Safe Time Leave to protect and better the lives of Domestic Violence survivors.
